I finally watched a crew use drone mapping instead of manual grade checking

Was out at a site near Austin last month and the survey team just pulled out a drone. They mapped the entire 5 acre lot in under 20 minutes. How much time are you guys really saving with these things compared to a rod and level?

20 minutes versus half a day with a crew. It's a no brainer for big open lots. Just watch out for tree canopy or tall fences, those mess up the drone's line of sight.

The tree canopy thing is real but it's not actually a line of sight problem, most mapping drones use RTK GPS and camera stitching so they don't need a direct view of the controller the whole time. What really trips them up is tall grass or low contrast surfaces that confuse the photogrammetry software, not fences or branches blocking radio signals. Still saves a ton of time on open ground though, no question about that.
