That talk with an architect last week changed my mind about BIM

I was bitching about BIM models being overcomplicated for residential work. Then this architect I respect pulled me aside after a meeting and said we lose 15% of our margin on rework because nobody has a unified model. He showed me a 3-year timeline from a mixed-use project where they cut change orders by 40% just by catching clashes in the model before framing started. It hit different because he wasn't selling anything, just showing the numbers. Now I'm wondering if I've been resisting tech that actually solves real problems. Has anyone else had a moment where a contractor or designer flipped your opinion on a tool you hated?

40% fewer change orders and he wasn't even trying to sell you software, that's the part that gets me. I had a similar moment when a framer showed me his iPad with the model pulled up on site and he could see exactly where the ductwork was going to hit his studs before he even ordered material. Makes you feel kind of dumb for all the times you swore paper drawings were just fine.

Totally get that feeling, it hits hard when the proof is right there in front of you.
