A weird thing at the self-checkout line changed how I bag my stuff

Honestly, I was just grabbing a few things at the big grocery store on Elm Avenue. I was at the self-checkout, and I put my heavy stuff in one bag and my bread and eggs in another, like I always do. The machine started beeping like crazy and a screen popped up saying 'unexpected item in bagging area'. I had to wait for an employee to come over and clear it, which took like five minutes with a line behind me. The employee told me the weight sensor got confused because I put a single can of soup in the bag first. Ngl, I felt so dumb just standing there. Now I put the heaviest thing in last so the scale doesn't freak out. It's such a tiny change but it saves me from that awful beeping. Has anyone else figured out a trick to keep those machines quiet?

Ever try putting your reusable bags in the area before you even start scanning? I found the sensor gets less jumpy if the bag's weight is already there from the beginning. You just have to hit the 'I brought my own bag' button first.

Wait, does that actually work at your store? I've tried hitting the bag button first but the scale still freaks out if I add anything heavy later.

My local store’s scale just ignores bags completely.
