Had to pick between paper charts and my phone for navigating Lake Tahoe this weekend...
I was going kayaking on Lake Tahoe Saturday and had to decide between bringing a laminated paper map or just using my phone's GPS. I went with the phone because it was easier, but the battery died 2 hours in and I got completely turned around trying to find the launch point. Has anyone else had a tech choice backfire on them like that?

My buddy did this exact same thing on a river in Oregon. He had his phone on a waterproof case, thought he was set. Battery died three miles in and he didn't realize how far he'd drifted from where he put in. Ended up having to flag down a passing boat to get a tow back. Now he keeps a paper map taped to his cooler in a ziplock bag. Learned the hard way.
