Heard someone at the coffee shop say self checkout is killing jobs, but I saw the opposite at our local grocery store
The guy behind me was ranting about how self checkout kiosks are taking away cashier jobs, and I just stood there thinking about my visit to Publix last Tuesday. They had 6 self checkouts and 4 regular lanes open, plus two employees just standing around helping people with the machines. So are these machines actually replacing jobs, or are they just changing what the jobs look like? I'm leaning toward the second but I'd like to hear from folks who work retail or have seen it play out in their town.

The guy ranting about job loss probably never worked retail during the holidays when they have to call in everyone they know just to keep up with the chaos. Those two people standing at the self checkout are basically the new cashiers, just with less sitting down and more repeating "please place your item in the bagging area." If anything, it's job creation for people who enjoy explaining to grown adults that you can't scan your reusable bag. But sure, let's pretend an automated beepy box is taking over the world while every store still has a guy unlocking the peanut butter case.

Nah Derek99 you nailed it, that peanut butter lock guy is proof jobs aren't going anywhere.
