Just realized a trip to the hardware store last Tuesday changed my whole approach to hanging pictures.

I was trying to hang a shelf in my old plaster wall and the clerk told me to always use a stud finder and a specific type of toggle bolt, which I'd never bothered with before, so what's your go-to method for hanging things on tricky walls?

Always use a stud finder" is overkill. I just tap the wall and use a regular anchor, works fine for years.

My last apartment had plaster walls from the 1950s. Tapping just gave me a sore knuckle and zero useful info. Bought a cheap magnetic stud finder for maybe fifteen bucks. It actually finds the nails in the studs, not just guessing at density. Saved me from a bunch of hidden pipes and a real disaster. Now I won't hang a shelf without it.

Honestly, I've tried the tapping method and ended up with more Swiss cheese walls than a cartoon mouse house. My stud finder beeps like crazy at me, which is fitting because I'm usually just guessing anyway. I'm starting to think my walls are made of hopes and plaster.
