Left my grocery bags in the car, now I'm debating if paper is even eco-friendly

I walked into Kroger on Saturday, grabbed a cart, and only realized halfway through produce that I left all my reusable bags sitting in the trunk for the third time this month. So I paid 60 cents for paper bags, but now I'm wondering if the energy to make those cancels out the whole point, has anyone else done the math on this or am I just overthinking a Tuesday problem?

Paper bags actually biodegrade, so landfill is the afterlife either way.
