My 8 year old coffee maker finally gave up last Tuesday.
It just stopped brewing mid cycle with half a pot of water sitting in the reservoir. I had to pour the grounds out and make instant coffee instead, which tasted like dirt. I’ve been using a french press since then and honestly the cleanup is a pain. Any tips for finding a decent drip machine that won’t break the bank?

Eight years is pretty good for a budget machine, but do yourself a favor and skip the garage sale stuff. A used coffee maker can have mineral buildup in the lines you can't see (even after cleaning), which messes with brew temperature. For a decent new drip machine without the fancy bells and whistles, look for something with a simple on/off switch and a thermal carafe instead of a glass one. A basic Mr. Coffee with those two features runs about 25 bucks and won't give you that burnt-plastic taste you get from the cheap glass carafe models.

Eight years on a $30 coffee maker. I'd say you got your money's worth. Is it really worth hunting for a new one?

Found a basic Cuisinart at a garage sale for five bucks a few years back. Cleaned it up good and it still makes a SOLID pot every morning. Sometimes you just gotta look for the simple stuff instead of the fancy machines with all the buttons.
