Overheard a barista call someone 'sweetie' and it changed my whole day

Overheard a barista call someone 'sweetie' at a coffee shop in Portland on Tuesday. Guy in a suit got all stiff about it, didn't say a word. Made me realize those casual nicknames we throw around can really bother people without us knowing. I've said 'boss' or 'chief' to coworkers without thinking, and now I'm second guessing every time I do it. Is it just me being too sensitive, or has a random 'hon' ever ruined your mood too?
