TIL those 'quick fix' drain cleaners are a total waste of cash

My kitchen sink was draining slow, so I grabbed a bottle of that foaming drain cleaner from the hardware store. It cost me $12 and said it would work in 15 minutes. Well, it fizzed a bit and did nothing (the drain was just as slow). I ended up having to call a plumber anyway, who pulled out a big glob of grease and hair. So I basically threw $12 straight down the drain, ha. Anyone have a better home trick for a slow sink before calling for help?

Wait, they charged you $12 for that tiny bottle? That's insane.

That $12 bottle probably has like 2 cents worth of chemicals in it. @hernandez.brooke is right that Consumer Reports called those out as basically just expensive water. But seriously, did you at least try a plunger first before you bought that thing? I swear half the time people just need to get a better seal with a plunger and it fixes the clog in 10 seconds. Those little bottles just make you feel like you did something when really you just threw money away.

Consumer Reports said those cleaners rarely work on clogs.
