Unpopular opinion: I don't think the 3-second rule for dropped food is gross.

My friend gasped when I ate a chip that fell on my kitchen floor last week, but I've done it for years and never gotten sick. Does anyone else think the reaction is a bit over the top?

My kitchen floor is probably cleaner than most restaurant tables. I've eaten toast that landed butter-side down and just brushed it off. The real danger zone is carpet, that's where you find the ancient crumbs and mystery fibers. A clean linoleum floor is basically a large, cold plate.

Honestly my floor is so clean because I drop food on it constantly, it's basically my backup pantry. The five second rule turned into a five minute policy years ago. You're right about carpet though, that's where snacks go to become science projects.

Backup pantry" is a perfect way to put it, my floor is basically a charcuterie board. I'm with @kevin218 on the toast thing, a quick dust-off and you're good. My only rule is if it starts growing legs, maybe leave it for the carpet science fair.
