Why does grocery pickup always mess up my produce order

I used to walk through the produce section myself, squeeze every avocado, and check the dates on the milk. Now I just tap a few buttons on the app and pray, because I work late and the store closes at 9pm. Last Tuesday I ordered 4 Roma tomatoes for salsa and got 4 sad, soft ones that looked like they had been sitting in a hot car for a week. The app says they pick the "best available" but I swear they grab whatever is closest to the register. I get that it saves me time, but paying $2.49 for garbage tomatoes feels like a rip-off every single time. Has anyone else had luck asking for specific substitutions or do you just accept the mystery produce?
