A customer's comment made me rethink refusing free diagnostics
Last week a guy brought in an old receiver, and I told him the check would cost $40. He just laughed and said, 'Man, I could buy a new one for that.' Honestly, that hit different because he's right. We've all normalized charging for the look, but it's pushing people to toss gear instead of fixing it. Maybe a free basic check with a repair deposit would keep more stuff alive. Has anyone else tried dropping the upfront fee and seen more work come in?

Funny enough, that whole idea reminds me of my buddy who runs a bike shop. He stopped charging for flat tire fixes and just asked for a five buck donation if people could swing it. Now he's got a line out the door because folks bring in their whole bike for a tune up after. He says the free look gets them in, and the trust gets them spending. Different gear, same trap, I guess. People just want to know you're not trying to stick them before they even commit to fixing anything.
