Blew a $60 capacitor by using the wrong solder
I was recapping an old Pioneer receiver and used some random 60/40 solder I had lying around. Turns out my iron wasn't hot enough for the big ground planes and I ended up heating that cap for way too long. It bulged right up and popped within 5 minutes of powering on. Has anyone else killed a component just from bad technique?

Been there man, it stings when you wreck a pricey part just from being a little impatient with the heat. That sinking feeling when you see the bulge start is the worst.

Man if you blew a $60 cap that was probably your iron's fault for real, not the solder. 60/40 is fine for most stuff as long as you've got the heat right. You probably just needed more tip contact time or a bigger iron tip for those ground planes, not a different solder.
