Tried cleaning a corroded Game Boy board in my ultrasonic cleaner and now I'm wondering if I wrecked it
I got a beat up original Game Boy from a flea market in Mesa for $15 and the battery contacts had that white fuzzy corrosion all over them. I figured my ultrasonic cleaner with some distilled water and a splash of Simple Green would be the fastest way to fix it, so I ran it for 6 minutes at 45 degrees. When I pulled the board out, a couple of the tiny pads near the power switch looked way shinier than the rest, and one cap had shifted just a hair off its pads. The thing actually powers on now, but I'm not sure if I got lucky or if I just can't see the damage yet. So here's my question for the group, is an ultrasonic on old thru-hole boards a smart move or am I playing with fire? Half the guys I know swear by it and the other half say you should never dunk a board that old. Somebody tell me who's right here.
