My kid called the 'Friends' finale 'boring' and I had to sit down

We were watching the last episode on my old DVD set last weekend and my 14-year-old just shrugged. He said it was a 'fine ending' but didn't get why people made a big deal. It hit me that he's never known a world without streaming, where you had to wait a whole week, or summer, for a new episode. That finale in 2004 felt like saying goodbye to actual friends you'd checked in with for ten years. Now, with so many shows dropping all at once, I wonder if finales can ever feel that heavy again. Did the shift to binge-watching kill the weight of a series finale for good?

My 16-year-old niece said the same thing about the Seinfeld finale last month (she called it "underwhelming"). I tried to explain how we all gathered in my college dorm common room to watch it live, and the weird quiet that fell over the whole building when it ended. The whole experience was an event you built your week around, not just another show in the queue.

That "weird quiet" you felt is still possible with streaming finales though.
