Talked to a librarian about the final book in a series I loved
She told me she actually prefers the controversial ending because it leaves the main character's fate up to the reader, and it made me wonder if I've been too harsh on ambiguous endings my whole life.

Oh man, ask her if she hates when the setup feels like a trap just as much as I do.

ok but what if it's not about the ending at all and it's more about how the movie sets up expectations the whole time. like maybe she's fine with ambiguous endings in arthouse stuff because she knows that's the deal going in, but in a blockbuster where everything points to a clear answer it feels like a cop out. i feel like nobody talks about the setup part.
