My compost bin disaster taught me to check 'compostable' labels closely

I threw some food packages marked 'compostable' into my backyard compost last year. They never broke down and just made a mess. I learned that most 'compostable' labels mean it only works in big industrial compost places, not at home. Now I always look for tiny words like 'home compostable' or seals from groups like BPI. It's a quick look that stops waste problems. How do you handle these tricky packaging claims?

Ugh, I check the fine print every time now.

Yeah it's such a minefield lol. I had a similar thing with those "plant based" plastic cups, left one outside as a test and it just sat there for months looking sad. Makes you wonder if the labels are more about making us feel good than actually helping.

Those compostable labels are correct for big composting plants, which many towns use now. It's not the package's fault if your backyard bin can't handle it. The system is built for those facilities, so the labels guide proper disposal. Getting hung up on home composting misses the point of reducing waste on a larger scale.
