My aunt's website 'favor' taught me to set boundaries
I kept getting asked for free graphic design work by family members. It started with my aunt wanting a new logo for her bakery. I used to say yes every time, but it ate into my paid work hours. I felt guilty turning them down. Now, I have a polite script I use to decline gently. I explain that I have client projects with deadlines, but I can offer a family discount. This keeps things professional and avoids hurt feelings. Surprisingly, some relatives now see my work as valuable and have become paying clients.

Absolutely, that first firm "no" changes everything. Once you draw that line, they'll never see your work the same way again.

My uncle's basement computer repair side gig went the same way. It's funny how setting that first boundary teaches everyone the actual value of your time.

Read a blog post once where a freelance designer said the same thing. They did free logo work for a friend's startup, and suddenly everyone expected freebies. Charging that first person, even just twenty bucks, made all their other friends see it as real work overnight.
